13 Free Idle Games on Steam, Sorted by What "Free" Actually Means

Free idle games on Steam, checked store page by store page: 13 picks split into truly free and free with purchases, with review scores and what each one sells.

The best free idle games on Steam with nothing to buy are Bitburner, Magic Archery and Viridi. The best free-to-play ones, where purchases exist but you can ignore them, are NGU Idle, Leaf Blower Revolution and Antimatter Dimensions. All thirteen picks below are free to download and well reviewed, and each entry says plainly what, if anything, the game sells.

That split is the point of this page. On Steam, "Free to Play" covers both a hobby project with no store at all and a game with a premium currency shop, and the store badge does not tell you which. For every game here we checked the Steam page in November 2026 for the In-App Purchases flag and the DLC list. Review percentages come from the IncrementalGames.org catalog's Steam counts.

01

Bitburner: best for learning to code while numbers go up

Platform: Browser, Steam · free

Bitburner is a programming-based idle RPG: you play a hacker in a dystopian world and write real JavaScript scripts to hack servers, train skills, trade on the stock market and automate everything. The Steam page says a basic programming background helps but is not required.

It is open source, built over five years with contributions from hundreds of developers, and on Steam it has no in-app purchases and no DLC. It runs on Windows, Mac and Linux and is 95% positive from about 7,400 reviews as of November 2026.

Pick it if you have ever wanted an idle game where the automation is something you build yourself. For more like it, see our incremental programming games guide.

Watch out for: If you do not want to write code at all, the game stalls quickly. Scripts are the main way to progress.

02

Magic Archery: best for a free game you can finish in one evening

Platform: Browser · free

Barribob's Magic Archery has you train a commoner into the greatest archer: craft and shoot targets, take quests for gold and clout, buy training and equipment upgrades and infuse arrows with magic. The store page states it plainly: no in-app purchases, a short and active incremental, and a definite ending.

It is the best-reviewed game on this list at 98% positive from about 6,360 Steam reviews as of November 2026. It is free on Windows with cloud saves.

Pick it as your first free Steam idle game if you have never played one. It shows the whole genre loop in a few hours and then ends.

Watch out for: It is short and active by design. If you want something to idle for months, this is not it.

03

Outpath: First Journey: best for trying a 3D clicker base builder for free

Platform: Steam · free

Outpath: First Journey is the free prologue to Outpath, covering the main game's first two biomes. It is a first-person 3D clicker base builder that the developer describes as taking Satisfactory, Minecraft and Forager as references: gather, craft, automate your base, buy more islands, fish and level skills, playing actively or idle.

It is 96% positive from about 1,720 Steam reviews as of November 2026, and Steam lists no in-app purchases or DLC for the prologue.

Pick it if most idle games look too flat for you. It is the most "video game" looking entry here.

Watch out for: It is a prologue. When you finish the two biomes, the rest of the game is in the paid Outpath.

04

Viridi: best for a quiet real-time plant pot

Platform: Steam · free

Viridi asks you to nurture a small pot of succulents that grow in real time. You tend them, watch them grow, and come back when you want a moment of quiet. It is barely a game in the number-climbing sense, and that is the appeal.

It has been free on Steam since 2015 for Windows, Mac and Linux, is 92% positive from about 9,300 reviews as of November 2026, and the only DLC Steam lists is the soundtrack.

Pick it if you want the calm, check-in rhythm of idle games without any upgrades to optimise.

Watch out for: There is no progression to chase. Players expecting an incremental game will find it thin.

05

Idle Spiral: best for maths-flavoured idling with cosmetic-only DLC

Platform: Steam, Mobile, Browser · free

Idle Spiral is built around spirals and equations: you buy upgrades to make the spiral grow further from the origin, and layered prestige resets push you further each time. A Battle Spiral mode later uses your spiral as a weapon against other spiral designs, with a complex boss in the second half.

It is free on Windows and Mac. The DLC list is spiral visual packs and a support pack, which read as cosmetic from their names. It is 79% positive from about 1,900 Steam reviews as of November 2026.

Pick it if you like the look of maths more than the maths. The store page says you hardly need to understand the formulas to play.

Watch out for: Eleven DLC packs sit on the store page. They are skins, but expect to see them advertised.

06

Industry Idle: best for factory and market trading fans

Platform: Steam, Browser · free

Industry Idle combines factory building, resource management and a market simulation. The Steam page lists more than 130 factories, over 90 resources, a dozen procedurally generated maps, 50+ policies, charts for finding bottlenecks, offline earnings based on company valuation, prestige and real-time trading with other players.

It is free on Windows, Mac and Linux from FishPond, the studio behind CivIdle. Steam lists no in-app purchases, but there are paid expansion packs. It is 77% positive from about 1,490 reviews as of November 2026.

Pick it if you like production chains and want a free alternative to paid factory idlers. Our idle factory games guide covers the rest of that subgenre.

Watch out for: The base game is free, but Steam lists paid expansion packs, and part of the economy depends on other players' trades.

07

Upload Labs: best for node-graph optimisers who want to try first

Platform: Steam · free

Upload Labs is a sci-fi management game where you build your computer's system from window-like nodes, connecting outputs to inputs to download, process and upload files. Research, hacking, coding and AI development unlock more nodes as you try to save the universe from heat death.

It is free on Windows and Linux and 90% positive from about 4,890 Steam reviews as of November 2026. Steam lists no in-app purchases, but the DLC list includes Daily Tokens, a Time Generator, Permanent Boosts and customizations.

Pick it if you enjoy optimising flow diagrams. Just know that some DLC sells progress, not looks.

Watch out for: "Permanent Boosts" and "Time Generator" are paid DLC. The game is free, but it is not purchase-free.

08

Antimatter Dimensions: best for prestige layers stacked on prestige layers

Platform: Browser, Steam, Mobile · free

Antimatter Dimensions starts with buying dimensions that produce antimatter, and the first goal is reaching Infinity. After that the game, in its own words, has just begun: challenges, more reset layers, automation with a custom scripting language, black holes and 100 Steam achievements.

It began as a web game by Hevipelle in 2016 and is free on Steam for Windows and Mac, 92% positive from about 4,620 reviews as of November 2026. The Steam page notes "We added a shop!" and Steam lists in-app purchases.

Pick it if you want one of the canonical deep incrementals. The catalog records an ending, but it takes hundreds of hours.

Watch out for: Steam lists in-app purchases. The browser version is also free if you would rather play without the Steam client.

09

NGU Idle: best for silly humour and hundreds of hours

Platform: Steam, Browser · free-to-play

NGU Idle (Numbers Go Up) mixes idle and active play with a weird, funny story, an RPG inventory with over 350 hand-drawn items and over 300 bosses, including a flock of Canada geese and a giant sundae. Systems keep unfolding the further you go.

It is free on Windows and is 96% positive from about 13,000 Steam reviews as of November 2026, one of the highest totals on this list. The developer's Steam page says premium currency can be earned passively at a decent pace and that you should only pay if you want to, not because you need to.

Pick it if you want a long free game with personality and do not mind a premium shop you can ignore.

Watch out for: Steam lists in-app purchases. The art is deliberately rough, which is a joke some players do not enjoy.

10

Leaf Blower Revolution: best for a huge free idler you can leave running

Platform: Steam, Mobile · free-to-play

Leaf Blower Revolution is about blowing virtual leaves, then buying autoblowers so you do not have to. The store page lists 30+ leaf types, 38+ shops, 40+ areas, 32+ pets, a crafting system and a Cheese Pub with minigames, and it plays actively or passively.

It is free on Windows and has the most reviews of any game here: 94% positive from about 26,500 as of November 2026. Steam lists in-app purchases and seven DLC items.

Pick it if you want the biggest, most popular free idle game on Steam and you are fine with a store in the corner.

Watch out for: Steam lists in-app purchases and several DLC packs. The early game is simple enough that some players quit before the systems open up.

11

Unnamed Space Idle: best for sci-fi ship builds that unfold for weeks

Platform: Browser, Steam · free

Unnamed Space Idle has you fight endless alien waves with a ship you customise from progressively unlocked weapons and defenses, each suited to certain enemy types. More than ten systems unfold over time: cores, compute, synth crafting, void devices, a reactor, research and several prestige layers.

It is free in Early Access on Windows and Linux and 92% positive from about 4,490 Steam reviews as of November 2026. Steam lists in-app purchases.

Pick it if you want a long, unfolding idle game with a clear sci-fi theme. Our idle space games guide has more in this vein.

Watch out for: It is still in Early Access, so systems change between updates, and Steam lists in-app purchases.

12

Revolution Idle: best for pure, fast number-go-up with automation

Platform: Steam, Mobile · free-to-play

Revolution Idle is a free idle incremental about filling circles, triggering prestiges to raise multipliers, reaching about 1.79e308 for Infinity, then Eternity and beyond. The store page lists full automation with a macro builder, 520+ achievements with real bonuses, offline progress and a global leaderboard.

It is free on Windows and 87% positive from about 12,500 Steam reviews as of November 2026. Steam lists in-app purchases.

Pick it if you like Antimatter Dimensions-style layer climbing but want it faster and more visual.

Watch out for: Steam lists in-app purchases and no cloud saves, so a new PC means moving your save by hand.

13

Farmer Against Potatoes Idle: best for loot-heavy idle RPG grinding

Platform: Steam · free-to-play

In Farmer Against Potatoes Idle an amnesiac farmer fights hordes of mutated potatoes. The Steam page counts five worlds with nine areas of 100 waves each, over 250 visually different equipment items with millions of roll combinations, classes, talents and automation for inventory management.

It is free on Windows from Oni Gaming, the same team listed on Revolution Idle, and is 95% positive from about 8,190 Steam reviews as of November 2026. Steam lists in-app purchases.

Pick it if you want the idle RPG side of the genre: gear, waves and builds, with silly enemies.

Watch out for: Steam lists in-app purchases and no cloud saves. The early waves are slow until your first few systems unlock.

How to choose a free idle game on Steam

Decide how you feel about stores first, then pick by length and style.

01

Check what "free" means to you

No store at all: Bitburner, Magic Archery and Outpath: First Journey. Only cosmetics or a soundtrack: Viridi and Idle Spiral. Paid expansions or boosts as DLC: Industry Idle and Upload Labs. In-app purchases listed on Steam: Antimatter Dimensions, NGU Idle, Leaf Blower Revolution, Unnamed Space Idle, Revolution Idle and Farmer Against Potatoes Idle. For more, see our guide to idle games without microtransactions.

02

Match it to how long you want to play

One evening: Magic Archery. A weekend: Outpath: First Journey. Weeks to months: NGU Idle, Leaf Blower Revolution, Unnamed Space Idle, Revolution Idle and Farmer Against Potatoes Idle. Antimatter Dimensions has an ending, but the catalog puts it in the hundreds of hours.

03

Match it to your PC

Mac players should start with Bitburner, Viridi, Idle Spiral, Industry Idle or Antimatter Dimensions, which list Mac builds. Linux builds are listed for Bitburner, Viridi, Industry Idle, Upload Labs and Unnamed Space Idle. Everything else on this list is Windows only on Steam.

Install one before you close this tab

If you want nothing to buy, start Magic Archery tonight and finish it, then move to Bitburner if you want a long game. If you are fine ignoring a store, NGU Idle and Leaf Blower Revolution are the most-reviewed long games here.

Our free Steam incremental list has many more, filterable by how idle they are and whether they end.
