14 Types of Idle Games, Each With the One Game That Defines It

The 14 main types of idle games, from clickers and tycoons to programming and desktop idlers, each with one standout example and where to find more like it.

Idle games split along two lines: what you do (click, plan, fight, code, wait) and what grows (money, a civilisation, a party of heroes, a number with no theme at all). The fourteen types below are the ones that come up most in our catalog of more than 1,600 hand-tagged games. Each has one example we think shows the type at its best, plus a link to the tag or list where you can browse every game of that kind.

These categories overlap. A game can be a tycoon and a clicker, or an RPG with a prestige tree, and most of the catalog carries three or four tags. Think of each type as a starting point, not a box. Review percentages are from Steam as of November 2026; idle scores (0 to 100, the share of progress that happens without you) are our editors' estimates.

01

Clickers: (the) Gnorp Apologue: best for hands-on players who like visible chaos

Platform: Steam · paid

A clicker makes your own input the first engine of growth. (the) Gnorp Apologue by Myco, released on Steam in December 2023, starts with you striking a rock for shards, then hiring a crew of small creatures, gnorps, to smash and haul for you. Synergies between them stack until the screen is a mess of activity and the numbers explode.

It shows what modern clickers do well: the click matters early, then becomes a lever you pull at the right moment. It costs $6.99 and holds 96% positive from more than 8,000 Steam reviews. Browse more on the clicker tag or in our best clicker games guide.

Watch out for: It is a paid, Steam-only game with a finite arc, so it will not run for months the way a free browser clicker can.

02

Idle tycoons: Idle Planet Miner: best for phone players who like production chains

Platform: Mobile · free-to-play

An idle tycoon gives you businesses or facilities that earn on their own once you hire managers. Idle Planet Miner by Tech Tree Games (the studio behind The Tower) has you mine planets for ore, smelt it into bars, craft items, respond to market prices, and earn while away. Reviewers describe selling a whole galaxy for permanent multipliers, which is its prestige.

Tycoons are the most common type on mobile, and this one adds a real production chain rather than just bigger shops. It is free to download on iOS and Android, and has a Steam listing. More on the tycoon tag and in our idle tycoon guide.

Watch out for: It is free to play with ads and in-app purchases from $4.99 to $29.99 on the App Store, including a $9.99 Remove Ads option. Its age rating lists loot boxes.

03

Idle RPGs and hero collectors: Idle Champions of the Forgotten Realms: best for Dungeons & Dragons fans who like party building

Platform: Steam, Mobile · free-to-play

An idle RPG fights for you while you manage the team. Idle Champions by Codename Entertainment is a Dungeons & Dragons game where you arrange champions in a formation and they push through adventures on their own. Its Steam page counts over 140 champions, including characters from Baldur's Gate 3, and hundreds of adventures.

The decisions are about placement and synergy, not reflexes, which is the heart of the type. It is free to play on Steam and mobile, and holds 77% positive from about 15,000 Steam reviews. See the incremental RPGs list for the deeper, less monetised end of the type.

Watch out for: It sells paid packs (one founder's pack is $29.99) and leans heavily on events and collection, so completionists can spend a lot.

04

Skilling idlers: Idle Pixel: best for RuneScape-style skillers on a budget

Platform: Browser · free-to-play

A skilling idler trains skills in the background: you pick an activity, it levels up over time, and its output feeds other skills. Idle Pixel, a browser game, has guides for mining, crafting, gathering, farming, brewing, woodcutting, cooking, fishing and breeding, plus team raids and hiscores. Our catalog rates it 85 idle.

The type is best known through Melvor Idle and Legends of IdleOn, but Idle Pixel is a smaller, friendlier way in with a shared online world. Browse the skilling tag and our idle MMO guide for the rest.

Watch out for: It needs an account and an internet connection, and it has a donor shop. Its site also promotes a separate browser MMO by the same team, so check that the game is still the one you want before investing.

05

Pure-numbers prestige games: Revolution Idle: best for optimisers who do not need a theme

Platform: Steam, Mobile · free-to-play

Some idle games drop the theme and keep only the maths: generators, multipliers and stacked prestige layers. Revolution Idle is a clean modern example, built from wheels inside wheels. Its Steam page describes 'offline progress, prestige layers, and endless automation' and a goal to 'reach infinity and go further'.

Antimatter Dimensions is the classic of this type; Revolution Idle is a gentler, more visual entry point. It is free on Steam and mobile and holds 87% positive from about 12,500 Steam reviews. More on the pure numbers tag and in the math incremental games list.

Watch out for: It is free to play with optional purchases, and pure-numbers games can feel empty if you are there for a world or story.

06

Civilisation and resource management: Shark Game: New Frontiers: best for players who like a web of resources

Platform: Browser · free

A resource management idler gives you many resources that feed each other, so the puzzle is balance rather than speed. Shark Game: New Frontiers by base4gamedev, a total conversion of Cirrial's original Shark Game, opens with its own description: 'You are a shark. Catch fish, hire animals, build machines, and uncover an ancient, interdimensional mystery.'

Each world has its own story, mechanics and upgrade tree, and the old prestige system became a visual tree. On galaxy.click it is rated 4.7 stars from more than 550 ratings. Kittens Game and Evolve are the bigger, older members of the type; browse the civilization tag for more.

Watch out for: Commenters on galaxy.click note that offline time is discarded when you change worlds, so plan world switches around your breaks.

07

Narrative and waiting games: THE LONGING: best for players who want waiting to mean something

Platform: Steam · paid

Narrative idlers use the genre's structure, waiting and unlocking, to tell a story. THE LONGING by Studio Seufz is the most extreme: you are a servant deep underground who must wait 400 real days for a king to wake. The clock keeps running while the game is closed. You can explore the caves, or just leave it.

It is a mix of adventure and idle game, as its own store page says, and it holds 92% positive from about 6,800 Steam reviews. For shorter stories with endings, see the story-driven incremental games list.

Watch out for: The 400 days are real. This is a game you live alongside for over a year, not one you finish in a weekend.

08

Desktop companions: Bongo Cat: best for something tiny that lives on your taskbar

Platform: Steam · free

A desktop companion sits on top of your other windows and progresses as you work. Bongo Cat by Irox Games is the simplest of all: a cat on your taskbar drums every time you press a key, and your typing and clicking earn points and random hats. It launched on Steam in March 2025 and holds 96% positive from almost 30,000 reviews.

Rusty's Retirement turned the same idea into a farm, and our catalog now tags 60 games this way. See the desktop companion tag and our desktop idle games guide.

Watch out for: It is a toy more than a game. There are almost no decisions to make, so players who want strategy should treat it as a companion to something deeper.

09

Short active incrementals: Keep on Mining!: best for a weekend of satisfying, hands-on growth

Platform: Steam · paid

Not every incremental is idle. Active or roguelite incrementals play in short, hands-on runs and spend the results in a permanent upgrade tree. Keep on Mining! by EagleEye Games, released in July 2025, has you sweep your cursor over rocks to break them, smelt ores, find artifacts and craft pickaxes, then spend materials in a big skill tree. Its store page calls it 'a short incremental mining game'.

This type grew fast after Nodebuster in 2024. Keep on Mining! costs $4.99 and holds 91% positive from about 3,100 Steam reviews. More on the roguelite tag and in our roguelite incrementals guide.

Watch out for: Short means short: expect hours, not weeks. A sequel, Keep on Mining! Worlds, is also on Steam, with lower reviews so far.

10

Programming incrementals: The Farmer Was Replaced: best for learning to code while numbers go up

Platform: Steam · paid

In a programming incremental, the automation is code you write. The Farmer Was Replaced by Timon Herzog has you 'program and optimize a drone to automate a farm and watch it do the work for you', in a Python-like language, then spend the harvest on new technology that opens harder automation puzzles.

It released on Steam in October 2025 for $9.99 and holds 97% positive from about 1,500 reviews. Bitburner is the free, JavaScript-based classic of the type. More on the programming tag and in our programming games guide.

Watch out for: It assumes you are willing to write real code. Beginners can learn as they go, but it is a puzzle game first and an idle game second.

11

Factory and automation idlers: Beltmatic: best for factory fans who want something calmer

Platform: Steam · paid

Factory idlers give you machines and belts and let you build a production line that runs on its own. Beltmatic by Notional Games is a small, clever one: its store page calls it 'a casual factory game where you combine numbers using mathematical operations'. You mine numbers, route them through adders and multipliers, and deliver target values to the hub.

It released in March 2024 for $6.99 and holds 95% positive from about 1,400 Steam reviews. For the more traditional resource-chain kind, browse the production chain tag and our idle factory games guide.

Watch out for: It is closer to a puzzle factory game than a classic idler; progress depends on your layouts, not on time passing.

12

Idle tower defence: The Perfect Tower II: best for tower defence that keeps going without you

Platform: Steam · free-to-play

Idle tower defence keeps the waves of enemies but lets your tower fight on its own, so the game is in upgrades and builds between waves. The Perfect Tower II by Fire Sword Studios mixes a tower defence core with a town, factories, mining and mini-games, and its Steam page promises you can 'Fully automate your game'.

It is free to play and holds 87% positive from about 4,500 Steam reviews. The genre's mobile giant, The Tower, comes from the same studio as Idle Planet Miner. See our idle tower defense guide and the tower defense tag.

Watch out for: Its automation scripting is powerful but takes reading to learn, and the menus get dense later on.

13

Loop and life-sim incrementals: Your Chronicle: best for players who like reincarnation stories

Platform: Steam, Mobile · paid

In a loop incremental, each run is a short, bounded life or time loop, and what you keep between them is the real progress. Your Chronicle by Samurai Games is a text-based idle RPG built this way: you live a life, reincarnate, and each life unlocks more of a long fantasy chronicle. Its Steam page counts more than 3,000 unique story actions.

Increlution and Progress Knight are other strong examples. Your Chronicle holds 80% positive from about 2,700 Steam reviews. More on the loop tag.

Watch out for: It is text-heavy and slow to explain itself. If walls of options put you off, start with Progress Knight, which teaches the same idea faster.

14

Tree games: The Communitree!: best for players who want a community in one game

Platform: Browser · free

Tree games are built on The Modding Tree engine: each prestige layer is a node on a tree, and resetting a node resets those below it. There are hundreds of them. The Communitree! by ducdat0507 describes itself on galaxy.click as 'A TMT mod about TMT mods', with layers that nod to other tree games and their makers.

It is a fun way to see the whole scene at once. It is rated 4.5 stars from more than 430 ratings and has nearly 88,000 plays on galaxy.click. Start with The Prestige Tree if you want the original, then browse the Modding Tree games list.

Watch out for: It references other tree games constantly. It is more fun once you have played one or two of them.

How to choose a type of idle game

Three questions narrow fourteen types down to two or three.

01

How much do you want to do?

If you want to play actively, look at clickers, short active incrementals and programming games. If you want progress while you work, look at desktop companions, skilling idlers and tycoons. The truly idle games list and active incremental games list split the catalog this way.

02

Do you want a story or a system?

Narrative and loop games tell a story and often end. Pure-numbers, tree and resource management games are systems you optimise, often for months. If you are new, a story game is a lower commitment; the short incremental games list keeps it under ten hours.

03

Where will you play?

Tree games, pure-numbers games and resource management games are mostly free in the browser. Desktop companions, active incrementals and programming games are mostly paid Steam games. Tycoons and hero collectors are mostly free-to-play mobile games, which often means ads and in-app purchases.

Common questions

What are the main types of idle games?

The most common are clickers, idle tycoons, idle RPGs, skilling idlers, pure-numbers prestige games, resource management games, narrative idlers, desktop companions, active or roguelite incrementals, programming games, factory games, idle tower defence, loop games and Modding Tree games.

What is the difference between an idle tycoon and a clicker?

A tycoon is about businesses that earn on their own once you hire managers. A clicker makes your clicks the main engine, at least early on. Many games, like AdVenture Capitalist, start as one and become the other.

Are all incremental games idle?

No. Active incrementals like Nodebuster and Keep on Mining! progress only while you play. They keep the growing numbers and upgrade trees but drop the waiting.

What is a desktop idle game?

A game that sits at the edge of your screen or on your taskbar while you do other things, like Bongo Cat or Rusty's Retirement. Most are on Steam for Windows, and some on Mac.

Where can I browse idle games by type?

Every game in our catalog is hand-tagged, and each tag has its own page, such as the tycoon tag or programming tag. The lists page groups them by platform, price and playstyle.
