13 Best Idle Games on Mac (Native macOS Builds, Checked on Steam, Plus Browser Picks)

Idle games on Mac: 13 picks with native macOS builds on Steam or in the browser, each with its minimum macOS version, Apple silicon notes and caveats.

Plenty of good idle games run natively on a Mac. On Steam, Melvor Idle, Rusty's Retirement, Cookie Clicker, Kittens Game, The Longing, Bitburner and Idle Slayer all ship macOS builds, and anything that runs in a browser works in Safari or Chrome with no install at all. The catch is that many popular Steam idlers are still Windows only, so it pays to check before you buy.

How we checked: in November 2026 we pulled each game's Steam store data and confirmed a macOS build is listed, then copied the minimum macOS version from its system requirements. Steam reviews come from our catalog's counts for the same month. Where a Steam page names Apple silicon, we say so; where it only mentions Intel, the game may run through Apple's Rosetta translation instead of natively.

01

Melvor Idle: best for RuneScape skilling on a MacBook

Platform: Browser, Steam, Mobile · paid

Melvor Idle turns RuneScape-style skilling into a calm idle game with 20+ skills, combat, dungeons and a bank. You choose an action and your character repeats it, including while the game is closed.

It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux on Steam, and its listed minimum is Mac OS X 10.9 with 512 MB of RAM, so almost any Mac will do. It also has a web version and cloud saves that work across platforms. 90% positive from 16,271 Steam reviews.

Watch out for: The Steam page says it needs an internet connection. The base game is paid, with three paid expansions on top.

02

Rusty's Retirement: best for a farm along the bottom of your Mac screen

Platform: Steam · paid

A retired robot farms a strip at the edge of your screen while you work. You plant, hire helper bots and upgrade the farm in spare moments. It is 95% idle in our catalog and has an ending after 15 to 30 hours.

It has a macOS build (minimum Mac OS X 10.9+) and 97% positive from 14,873 Steam reviews.

Watch out for: Its requirements mention an Intel Core i3 and do not name Apple silicon, so on an M-series Mac it may run under Rosetta. The Dock and the menu bar also take screen edges, so try the side and bottom positions in its settings.

04

Kittens Game: best for a deep, quiet game that lives in a Safari tab

Platform: Browser, Mobile · free

Kittens Game is a slow civilisation builder told in text and resource tables. The free browser version has been around since 2014; the Steam version arrived in February 2026 with macOS and Linux builds.

Steam lists macOS 12 Monterey and an Apple M1 or Intel Core M as the minimum. If you just want to try it, the browser version is the same game.

Watch out for: Resource caps fill up while you are away, and the opening hour is slow. It rewards patience more than attention.

05

The Longing: best for a strange, slow game that counts real days

Platform: Steam · paid

You are a Shade waiting 400 real days for a king to wake in an underground palace. The clock runs while the game is closed, and you can explore, read and decorate, or simply leave it.

It ships for Windows, macOS (minimum Mac OS X 10.11) and Linux, and has 92% positive from 6,788 Steam reviews. It is also Steam Deck Verified, if you want it on a handheld too.

Watch out for: It needs 5 GB of space, a lot for an idle game, and its pace is deliberately slow.

06

Bitburner: best for Mac developers who want to code their way up

Platform: Browser, Steam · free

Bitburner is a cyberpunk incremental where you write JavaScript to hack servers and automate the game. It is free and open source, with 95% positive from 7,431 Steam reviews.

The Steam version has a macOS build (minimum macOS Mojave 10.14). It also runs in the browser, which is the simplest way to start on a Mac.

Watch out for: It is idle only once your scripts are good. Expect to spend your first sessions writing code.

07

Idle Slayer: best for a runner idler that just arrived on macOS

Platform: Steam, Mobile · free-to-play

Idle Slayer is a runner-platformer on top of an idle economy: jump for coins and slay enemies when you are playing, and let it grind when you are not. It has offline progress, gear, bosses and a long run of dimensions to unlock.

It gained macOS and Linux builds in October 2026, according to GamingOnLinux. Steam lists macOS 12 Monterey or later, on Apple silicon or Intel. It has 84% positive from 10,918 Steam reviews.

Watch out for: Free to play with in-app purchases, and the best gains come from playing actively.

08

Increlution: best for a long planning game that runs on old Macs

Platform: Steam · paid

Increlution is a minimal incremental about time management: each generation survives a little longer, carrying instincts from previous lives. Our catalog records an ending after 40 to 100 hours.

Its macOS minimum is macOS 10.10 Yosemite with 512 MB of RAM, and the developer notes that if your machine runs a modern browser, it should run the game. It has 85% positive from 1,257 Steam reviews, and no DLC or in-app purchases.

Watch out for: Its requirements mention a 64-bit Intel processor, so on Apple silicon it may run under Rosetta. It is a planning game, so expect to replan often.

09

The Farmer Was Replaced: best for learning to code on a Mac by automating a farm

Platform: Steam · paid

You write Python-like scripts for a drone that farms for you, then spend the harvest on new tech that unlocks harder automation puzzles. It has 97% positive from 1,543 Steam reviews.

Its Steam requirements say Apple silicon is supported, with macOS 10.13 or later. It is one of the best ways to learn programming basics while playing.

Watch out for: It is a programming game first. If you do not want to write code, it will not become idle for you.

10 · Ours

Mushies!: best for a cozy pixel-art clicker with a free demo

Platform: Browser, Steam

Mushies! is the site maintainer's own game, so weigh this entry accordingly. You click a big mushroom, hire worker shrooms, build houses and dig underground in a pixel-art mushroom village, with 85+ upgrades and a Wisdom prestige loop. It is built in Godot.

It is upcoming on Steam, where the store page lists macOS 10.13 High Sierra or later on Intel or Apple M1. You can play the free demo in your browser on itch.io today, on any Mac. Try the demo here.

Watch out for: It is not released yet, so there are no Steam reviews, and it is a clicker: it wants more active play than the idle picks above.

11

Chillquarium: best for an aquarium that grows while you work

Platform: Steam · paid

Buy fish, raise them in real time and sell them for profit, or keep them for ticket income while you chase 156 species and rare colour variants. It is 93% positive from 6,972 Steam reviews.

Its macOS build needs macOS Catalina or later and just 2 GB of RAM. It is an easy, relaxing pick for a Mac on your desk.

Watch out for: It is a collection game more than a deep idler, and it has one DLC on Steam.

12

Birdwatching Notebook: best for a tiny postcard of birds in a screen corner

Platform: Steam · paid

Birdwatching Notebook places a small postcard scene in the corner of your screen. You decorate the spot, unlock new habitats, and dozens of bird species come to visit; you can photograph them with your camera.

It came out in May 2026, has 97% positive from 1,612 Steam reviews, and its macOS build lists macOS 11 Big Sur or later on Intel or Apple silicon.

Watch out for: Very light on game: it is a companion, not a challenge. It has two DLC on Steam.

13

Antimatter Dimensions: best for number purists who want a real ending

Platform: Browser, Steam, Mobile · free

Antimatter Dimensions is the reference point for pure numbers games: buy dimensions that buy dimensions, break infinity, then break reality. It has a real ending, after 200 to 600 hours in our catalog.

It is free in the browser and on Steam, where it lists macOS 10.9 or later and has 92% positive from 4,620 reviews.

Watch out for: The Steam version includes optional in-app purchases and lists a broadband connection; the browser version is the simplest way to play on a Mac.

How to choose an idle game for your Mac

Three checks before you buy.

01

Check the platform icons, then the requirements

On a Steam store page, look for the Apple icon next to the price, then scroll to the macOS tab in System Requirements. Many big idlers, including NGU Idle, Nodebuster, Tower Wizard and The Gnorp Apologue, list no macOS build at all as of November 2026.

02

Look for Apple silicon in the specs

Games that name Apple silicon or M1, like Cookie Clicker, Kittens Game, Idle Slayer, The Farmer Was Replaced and Birdwatching Notebook, should run natively on newer Macs. Ones that only mention Intel, like Rusty's Retirement and Increlution, may run through Rosetta, which works but can use more battery.

03

Use the browser as your fallback

Every browser incremental runs on a Mac. Kittens Game, Bitburner, Antimatter Dimensions and Cookie Clicker all have free web versions, and so do hundreds more. For a no-install session at a desk, see our browser games for work guide.

Pick one and play it today

For a long-term game: Melvor Idle or Kittens Game. For a desktop companion: Rusty's Retirement or Birdwatching Notebook. For something you can start this second with no install, open Kittens Game or Antimatter Dimensions in Safari.

Hundreds more games run in a browser on any Mac. Our list of incremental games you can play online is the quickest way to find them.

Common questions

Can you play idle games on a Mac?

Yes. Many Steam idle games ship macOS builds, including Melvor Idle, Cookie Clicker, Rusty's Retirement, Kittens Game, The Longing, Bitburner and Idle Slayer, and any browser incremental runs in Safari or Chrome.

Is Melvor Idle on Mac?

Yes. Its Steam version has Windows, macOS and Linux builds, with a minimum of Mac OS X 10.9. It also runs in the browser, with cloud saves shared across platforms.

Do Steam idle games run on Apple silicon Macs?

Most macOS builds do. Some name Apple silicon in their requirements, like Cookie Clicker and The Farmer Was Replaced. Others only list Intel and run through Rosetta 2, Apple's translation layer, which generally works for light games like these.

What if a Steam idle game has no Mac version?

Check whether it has a browser version first: Unnamed Space Idle, Antimatter Dimensions, Trimps and Evolve all do. Otherwise you would need a Windows compatibility layer or cloud gaming, which is beyond the scope of this guide.

Are there idle games on the Mac App Store?

Some iPhone and iPad idle games can run on Apple silicon Macs through the App Store if the developer allows it, but availability varies by game. Steam and the browser are the most reliable sources for idle games on a Mac.
