What Is Prestige in Idle Games? 12 Real Games That Show Every Kind of Reset

What is prestige in idle games? A plain answer, then 12 real games that show each kind of reset, what you keep, and when it is worth pressing the button.

Prestige is a reset you choose. You give up most of your progress (money, buildings, levels) and in return get something permanent, usually a currency or multiplier, that makes the next run faster. You climb back to where you were in a fraction of the time, then past it. Wikipedia's genre article describes it the same way: a voluntary reset for bonuses that persist across future runs.

Why would anyone want that? Because idle game costs grow exponentially, so every run eventually slows to a crawl. Prestige turns that wall into a ladder. Anthony Pecorella, who studied the genre while running browser games at Kongregate, called it a 'ladder climbing' effect that gives players a sense of power. The twelve games below each show a different kind of prestige, from a single multiplier to resets inside resets. Facts come from each game's store page, wiki or source code; review figures are Steam percentages as of November 2026.

01

AdVenture Capitalist: best for your first prestige: one simple multiplier

Platform: Steam, Mobile · free-to-play

In AdVenture Capitalist, resetting gives you angel investors, and each angel raises the revenue of every business in your next run. That is prestige at its simplest: one number carried over, one effect, no menus. The game shows how many angels you would claim, so the decision is just 'is this enough to bother?'

Pecorella's analysis of the game gives the formula: angels grow with the square root of your lifetime earnings, so doubling your angels takes about three to four times the previous run's earnings. Because it counts lifetime earnings, you can reset at the same point twice and still gain a little each time. It holds 88% positive on Steam.

Watch out for: Gold, the paid currency, can buy angels without a reset. The game is fully playable free, but it offers the shortcut often.

03

Egg, Inc.: best for frequent, independent resets on mobile

Platform: Mobile · free-to-play

Egg, Inc. by Auxbrain resets your farm back to the first egg and pays you in soul eggs, each boosting your egg values by a percentage. Its formula counts only what you earned since the last reset, not your lifetime total, so every run stands on its own. Pecorella calculated the exponent at roughly 1/7, which means a much bigger farm is needed to double your gain.

The result is a game built for many short climbs rather than a few long ones. You keep golden eggs, soul eggs, eggs of prophecy and epic research through each reset. Eggs of prophecy, earned from contracts, make every soul egg stronger, which is why players treat them as the real long-term goal.

Watch out for: Egg, Inc. is free to play with ads you can watch for boosts and paid golden eggs. Offline earnings are capped, so it rewards checking in a few times a day.

04

Antimatter Dimensions: best for resets inside resets

Platform: Browser, Steam, Mobile · free

Antimatter Dimensions has small resets (Dimension Boosts, Antimatter Galaxies) inside big ones. At 1.80e308 antimatter you Big Crunch for one Infinity Point, resetting antimatter, dimensions, boosts and galaxies. At 1.80e308 Infinity Points you reach Eternity, which resets the whole Infinity layer for Eternity Points. Then there is Reality.

This is what players mean by prestige layers: each one wipes out the layers below it and reshapes them with new upgrades. It sounds punishing, but the game automates each layer before asking you to do the next, so you rarely repeat the same work by hand. It is free, open source and 92% positive on Steam.

Watch out for: Each layer is longer than the last. The stretch before your first Eternity is where many players stall, and the wiki's guides help.

05

Realm Grinder: best for prestige where each run picks a different side

Platform: Steam, Browser, Mobile · free-to-play

Realm Grinder by Divine Games has three named layers: you abdicate, reincarnate and ascend. What makes its prestige distinctive is that abdicating is also when you choose a faction for the next run, from about a dozen, so the reset is a strategic choice rather than a pause.

Pecorella used Realm Grinder as an example of a prestige formula based on your best run rather than your total: doubling your gems needs about four times the previous run's earnings. In practice that means your record run sets your pace. It is free to play and 87% positive on Steam.

Watch out for: The faction and research system is dense. Plan to read a faction guide once you reach reincarnation, or you will spend runs on weak combinations.

06

The Prestige Tree: best for seeing prestige layers as a map

Platform: Browser · free

The Prestige Tree by Jacorb90 turns layers into a visible tree. Every node is its own prestige layer with its own currency and upgrades, and resetting a higher node resets the nodes beneath it. Our catalog counts twenty layers. The layout makes something abstract very concrete: you can see exactly what each reset will cost you.

It also became an engine. Its structure was generalised into the Modding Tree, which hundreds of community games are built on; our Modding Tree games list collects them. The Prestige Tree is free in the browser and on galaxy.click.

Watch out for: It uses many softcaps, so growth slows in steps. When a layer seems stuck, the answer is usually to push a different branch.

07

Progress Knight: best for prestige framed as a new life

Platform: Browser · free

Progress Knight starts you as a beggar and lets you work up through jobs and skills toward knighthood and beyond. Your character ages. Its README describes the reset: you can prestige to gain XP multipliers, based on how well your current life went, at the cost of your levels and assets, and you regain levels 'much, much more quickly' in the next life.

It is a gentle way to learn prestige, because the story explains it. Dying and starting again feels natural, and the multipliers show up immediately. Our catalog rates it 85 idle and estimates 8 to 20 hours. It is free in the browser and open source.

Watch out for: It progresses only while the tab is open. Our catalog lists its offline progress as unknown, so do not count on it advancing while closed.

08

Trimps: best for prestige plus a choice of challenge

Platform: Browser · free

In Trimps you breed an army of small creatures and push through zones. The Portal is the reset: you go back to the start and spend Helium, collected from bosses and later from Improbabilities, on permanent perks. Perks can be respecced, so the reset doubles as a chance to rebuild.

Trimps also ties prestige to challenges, runs with special rules that pay permanent rewards. The Steam page lists over 50. It is a free text-based game, in the browser since 2015 and on Steam since 2022.

Watch out for: Trimps is long and asks for planning. Expect your first Portal well into a play session, not in the first few minutes.

09

Evolve: best for prestige you trigger by ending the world

Platform: Browser, Mobile · free

Evolve takes a species from primordial ooze to a spacefaring civilisation, and its resets are events in the story. The first is Mutual Assured Destruction: you blow up your world and gain Plasmids. Later you can build a Genesis Ship and bioseed a new planet, which gives Plasmids and a second prestige resource, Phage.

Each reset type unlocks new options for the next run, including new species and planets, so prestige here feels like a branching campaign. Our catalog counts six layers. It is free in the browser and open source.

Watch out for: Evolve is deep and slow to explain itself. A community guide helps a lot once you reach your first reset.

10

Universal Paperclips: best for a reset at the end of a story

Platform: Browser, Mobile · free

Universal Paperclips is mostly a game with no prestige at all, and then it offers you one. At the end, once the universe is consumed, you can accept an offer to be sent to a parallel universe and start again with a bonus to creativity or public demand.

It shows that prestige does not have to be a loop you repeat a hundred times. It can be a single choice that reframes everything you just did. The game is free on the web, takes four to eight hours by our estimate, and is one of the best short games in the genre.

Watch out for: The restart is optional and most players stop at the ending. Do not play it expecting a long prestige loop.

Mushies! (ours): best for a cozy first prestige with a reason

Platform: Browser, Steam

Mushies! is the site maintainer's own game, so weigh this entry accordingly. It is a cozy pixel-art clicker about the last mushroom settlement on a patch of forest floor: you click to gather spores, recruit worker shrooms, and build gardens, labs and shrines. Its prestige is called RESHROOM: in the demo page's words, you 'trade the whole village for permanent wisdom and grow it again, better'.

It is a small, friendly example of the reset-for-a-currency pattern, inside a game with a story and an ending (the Steam page estimates three to four hours). The full game is upcoming on Steam, and a free browser demo is on itch.io.

Watch out for: It is upcoming, and the demo covers only part of the game. It is short by design, so it will not scratch a months-long prestige itch.

12

Legends of IdleOn: best for players who want progress with no reset

Platform: Steam, Browser, Mobile · free-to-play

Not every idle game uses prestige, and it is worth knowing the alternative. Legends of IdleOn by Lavaflame2 is an idle MMO where a whole account of characters trains skills at once. Our catalog records no prestige layer: progress comes from adding characters, unlocking worlds and stacking account-wide bonuses rather than resetting.

If the idea of losing your buildings puts you off, games like this, or Melvor Idle, keep everything. Legends of IdleOn is free to play on Steam, web and mobile, and holds 77% positive from nearly 30,000 Steam reviews.

Watch out for: It is free to play with a paid gem shop, and its 77% Steam score is lower than most games on this page, so read recent reviews before investing months in it.

How to decide when to prestige

Every game is different, but three rules hold up across most of them.

01

Reset when growth stalls, not when it slows

If your next purchase is minutes away, keep going. If it is hours away and nothing new is unlocking, you are at a wall and a reset will get you past it faster than waiting. Games like Cookie Clicker and AdVenture Capitalist show your pending prestige gain, so you can watch it climb.

02

Aim to double your bonus

A common rule of thumb is to reset when the reset would at least double your current prestige currency, or your multiplier. Early on that happens quickly. Later, with cube-root or 1/7-power formulas like Cookie Clicker's and Egg, Inc.'s, it takes much longer, and that is normal.

03

Pick a game whose reset you enjoy

If you like big, rare moments, play a layered game like Antimatter Dimensions or Realm Grinder. If you like frequent small climbs, play Egg, Inc. If you would rather never reset, play Legends of IdleOn or Melvor Idle. Our prestige games guide ranks the best of each.

Press the button once

The best way to understand prestige is to do it. Play Cookie Clicker or AdVenture Capitalist until your pending prestige gain shows a number that would double your bonus, then reset and notice how fast the first hour goes by.

Common questions

What does prestige mean in idle games?

It means resetting most of your progress on purpose in exchange for a permanent bonus that makes future runs faster. The bonus is usually a currency, like Cookie Clicker's heavenly chips, or a multiplier, like AdVenture Capitalist's angel investors.

When should I prestige for the first time?

When your progress has nearly stopped and the reset would give a noticeable bonus. A common rule is to wait until it would at least double your current prestige currency. In most games the first prestige comes within a few hours.

What do you keep when you prestige?

It depends on the game. Usually you keep the prestige currency, its upgrades and achievements, and lose resources, buildings and regular upgrades. Egg, Inc., for example, keeps soul eggs, golden eggs, eggs of prophecy and epic research.

What is a prestige layer?

One level of reset. Games with several layers, such as Antimatter Dimensions (Infinity, Eternity, Reality) or Realm Grinder (abdicate, reincarnate, ascend), have bigger resets that wipe out the smaller ones beneath them.

Are there idle games without prestige?

Yes. Melvor Idle and Legends of IdleOn have no global reset, and many story games, like A Dark Room, simply end. Each game page on this site records how many prestige layers a game has.
